Cumbaya Church Worship Center Construction Fulfillment of a Dream

CMI Executive Director Craig Murray with Cumbaya Church Senior Pastor Jorge Giacometti outside the new 900-seat worship center under construction.

I met Pastor Jorge Giacometti on my very first visit to Quito, Ecuador. A group of us were piled into a small van. I sat in the back row. Jorge and his wife Mayra were in the middle row holding their newborn baby.

We set off from the Batan Church that day to see a rapidly growing suburb of Quito known as Cumbaya. Batan believed God was calling them to plant a church in that community and invited the CMI team to help evaluate this opportunity. Jorge was to be the founding pastor.

Over the next several hours we surveyed the Cumbaya area and visited possible locations for the church. By the end of our time, we were as enthusiastic as the Batan Church about this new opportunity.

Today, the baby that was in Mayra’s arms is a teenager. The church that was just a dream is now the largest evangelical church in the northeastern sector of Quito. Back then they didn’t even have a sliver of land on which to start. Now they are building a 900-seat worship center.

Recently I was in Quito again. As I surveyed the new construction with Jorge, my mind returned to that van ride years ago when all this was just a dream.

Of course, the building isn’t the fulfillment of our dream. It is just the beginning! When finished the worship center will expand the church’s outreach to its community. It will enhance visibility and credibilty in a culture where facilities communicate much about the perceived seriousness and legitimacy of a church. More people will be discipled and sent out with the gospel to their families, neighborhoods and workplaces. Best of all, it will enable the Cumbaya Church to reach a size from which it can regularly and effectively plant new daughter churches.

Thank you for your prayers and support that help make this dream and many like it a reality. As you continue to pray, please lift up the need for a final $100,000 to complete the worship center by February.

It is a blessing to serve with you as catalysts to disciple nations. Together we are igniting vision, uniting leaders and equipping churches to see strategic cities like Quito experience an Encounter with God!
