Granny’s Sugar Cookies

1 cup softened butter
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt

Mix ingredients together. Divide the dough into 3 equal portions. Wrap each in plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator. (You can also keep it in the freezer.) Preheat the oven to 375 F. . After the dough is completely chilled, take out one portion at a time. Roll the dough out until it is 1/4 inch thick onto a well-floured surface. Use your favorite Christmas cookie cutters to cut the dough out. Place cookies on a baking sheet and cook for 8 minutes or until they are just beginning to brown. Cool on a wire baking rack.

Cookie Frosting

1/4 cup softened butter
2 cups powdered sugar (sifted to remove lumps)
1 teaspoon vanilla or almond extract
1-2 tablespoons milk

Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Beat until well mixed. Divide into separate bowls and add your preferred choice of food coloring to make various colors. Spread onto cooled cookies.
