Today, a single virus threatens the false storylines of the modern world. Her idols of comfort, prosperity, security, freedom, and most of all, progress for humans in the absence of God prove incapable of delivering on their promises
It’s no surprise many are suffering an existential, philosophical, and spiritual crisis.
The Church, however, clings to the presence of God, not the progress of man. We don’t stand and wag a bemused finger at the world. Instead, we fall to our knees and cling to Jesus.
Yes. The Church as the bride looks to the bridegroom of Christ for the hope of His presence.
As the Psalmist says in Psalm 46:
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.”
Because of God’s nearness and presence with His people, the Church can brightly shine the hope of the gospel during times of dark crisis.
It’s not that the Church goes untouched. She is refined. Her mission is refocused. And she boldly proclaims the hope of Christ to a hurting culture suddenly more open to the gospel.
As C.S. Lewis famously said, “God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our consciences, but shouts in our pains. It is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world.”
Last week, one of our Latin American pastors told me, “The Lord is speaking directly to the people. We are living in a unique moment of time.”
For the global Church, Christ is our unshakable cornerstone. Our firm hope. Our present refuge.
May His presence fill His people. And may His gospel go forth, bringing good news to millions in key cities of Latin America!
